Consumers Beware: James Hardie Siding 101 – House Wrap

Shoddy Construction happens every day, all across America, leading to customer dissatisfaction, product failure and even worse, lawsuits. At Carolina Exteriors, we are Consumer Advocates and educate homeowners about the construction process. All too often, consumers make hiring decisions with limited knowledge of what is included in a construction project.

Today’s video was taken when one of our owners, Clifton Muckenfuss, happened to drive past a James Hardie Hardieplank installation.

The existing Masonite siding was compromised due to water damage and in need of replacement, due to poor materials and of course NO HOUSEWRAP (aka moisture barrier). James Hardie has stringent installation specifications and when not adhered to, voids the product warranty. The following 4 Step Process should be followed for any reside project:

Step 1: Demo *Remove siding/corners/trim

Step 2: Inspect *All existing sheathing / plywood / framing should be inspected for damage

Step 3: Wrap *Install an approved moisture barrier over the existing sheathing / plywood)

Step 4: Install *First install corner boards, and then Hardieplank

This homeowner chose a contractor that is in clear violation of James Hardie installation specifications. The sheathing behind the Hardieplank will eventually rot behind the siding, leading to water intrusion into the wall cavity, possibly compromising insulation, causing mold, etc.

Oftentimes, contractors “present” and low price to entice a homeowner into signing a contract. The contractor will then cut corners, like not installing house wrap as seen in this video, ultimately leaving the customer to deal with future problems.
